Program description
The purpose of this Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) for Undergraduate-Focused Institutions is to support small scale research grants at institutions that do not receive substantial funding from the NIH, with an emphasis on providing biomedical research experiences primarily for undergraduate students and enhancing the research environment at applicant institutions.
Eligible institutions must award baccalaureate science degrees and have received no more than $6 million dollars per year of NIH support (in both direct and F and A/indirect costs) in 4 of the last 7 fiscal years. For institutions composed of multiple schools and colleges, the $6 million funding limit is based on the amount of NIH funding received by all the non-health professional schools and colleges within the institution as a whole.
This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) supports investigator-initiated mechanistic and/or minimal risk clinical trials addressing the mission and research interests of the participating NIH institutes. For the purpose of this NOFO, minimal risk clinical trials are defined as those that do not require FDA oversight, do not intend to formally establish efficacy, and have low risks to potentially cause physical or psychological harm.

FAQ
Who is eligible to apply for AREA (R15) grants?
Institutions where at least 50% of students are undergraduates pursuing bachelor's degrees. Your institution must have NIH research infrastructure and commitment.
Does my institution need prior NIH funding?
Not required, but helpful. Institutions should demonstrate research capacity within the past five years or commit to building research infrastructure.
What types of research does AREA support?
Biomedical and behavioral research involving human subjects in clinical trials. Projects should be feasible within undergraduate-focused institutional settings.
How competitive are these awards?
Moderately competitive. Success depends on research quality, institutional support, and alignment with NIH priorities. Prior undergraduate research experience is valued.
What is the typical funding level?
AREA grants typically provide $150,000-$200,000 in total costs per year. Project periods usually span three to four years.
💡 Tips for applicants
- Emphasize undergraduate involvement in research design and implementation. Show how students will learn from participation in the clinical trial.
- Document your institution's commitment through letters of support and resource pledges. Administrative backing strengthens competitiveness significantly.
- Detail your clinical trial infrastructure and IRB capacity. Demonstrate that your institution can manage human subjects research safely and ethically.
- Connect your research to NIH priority areas and health disparities. Alignment with agency strategic goals increases funding likelihood.
- Build a realistic budget and timeline. Account for IRB approval, recruitment, and data collection phases in your project schedule.
⚠️ Common mistakes
Weak institutional commitment letters. Reviewers need clear evidence that your college/university will resource the project financially and administratively.
Unclear clinical trial design or inadequate IRB infrastructure. Applications fail when human subjects protections aren't thoroughly addressed.
Overscoped projects for an undergraduate institution. Propose work feasible within your setting and faculty capacity.
