Hazardous Substances Research and Training Program – Other Research

The NIEHS Hazardous Substance Basic Research and Training Program utilizes Other Research Projects budget line to fund efforts to support research directed towards understanding and attenuating the public health effects resulting from exposure to hazardous substances. This includes support for continuing education and academic curricula on occupational health and safety management practices in the areas of emerging technologies (e.g., emerging hazardous waste products, green chemistry, and sustainable remediation) to industrial hygienists and graduate students involved in the evaluation, management, and handling of hazardous substances. This also includes Conferences and Scientific Meetings to support high quality scientific conferences that are directed towards understanding and attenuating the public health effects resulting from exposure to hazardous substances. Proposals must be within scope of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 and may include the following research areas: (1) advanced techniques for the detection, assessment, and evaluation of the effect on human health of hazardous substances; (2) methods to assess the risks to human health presented by hazardous substances; (3) methods and technologies to detect hazardous substances in the environment; and (4) basic biological, chemical, and physical methods to reduce the amount and toxicity of hazardous substances.

Each applicant for research projects must present a research plan and furnish evidence that scientific competence, facilities, equipment, and supplies are appropriate to carry out the plan. The cost principles for awards under this program are set forth in HHS regulations at 45 CFR 75, Subpart E and Appendix IX (hospitals) to Part 75. Commercial organizations are subject to the cost principles located at 48 CFR 31.2 Federal Acquisition Regulation.
