Funded Projects

Examples of what this program has supported.

FY2025 The grant program funded three programs:
--South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ($120,000)
Preventing Powered Haulage and Falling Material Hazards: MSHA
Training Materials for Miner Safety: The proposed program will develop training materials and deliver safety training that will equip miners to identify, avoid, and prevent accidents, directly supporting MSHA’s mission to reduce mining fatalities, illnesses, and injuries. The training will emphasize powered haulage and mobile equipment safety, and falling, rolling, or sliding rock or material.

--University of Arizona ($80,000)
Al-enabled Collaborative Training to Improve Miner Safety and Health Outcomes for New and Small Operators Mining Critical Minerals: This program will develop apps and other learning materials and assist 10 small / mid-sized operators and two new mining projects in critical minerals to train over 1,200 miners in the western US (AZ, CA, NV, SD, UT, WY).

--The Pennsylvania State University ($50,000)
Development of Training Materials for Health Effects of Critical Minerals: Project develops educational and training materials focusing on the health
effects of critical minerals in response to the President’s goals related to critical minerals (Executive Order No. 14156) and actions to increase mineral production (Executive Order 14241). Recipient will develop education and training materials for miners and their trainers related to the health effects of critical minerals. The Penn State Miner Training Program (PSMTP) trainer will also use the materials, once developed, in his training sessions to test their use. They will distribute the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)-approved printed training materials and host them on the PSMTP’s (https://sites.psu.edu/minertraining/) website.

Program details & compliance

Description

The purpose of Brookwood-Sago Mine Safety Grants, administered by MSHA, is to fund education and training programs that help miners and mine operators identify, avoid, and prevent unsafe and unhealthy working conditions, honoring victims of the 2001 Brookwood and 2006 Sago mine disasters. These grants support creating training materials and delivering programs focused on hazards like silica dust, powered haulage, mine rescue, and electrical safety, with special emphasis on small mines and new miners. Funded grants must align with the President’s priorities.
