Program Objective
To fund federally approved comprehensive State occupational safety and health programs that are "at least as effective" as the Federal program.

Final approval of funding requests is given annually by the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health.

Description
This activity supports states that assume responsibility for administering
occupational safety and health programs under State Plans approved by the Secretary. Under
section 23 of the OSH Act, grants matching up to 50 percent of total program costs are made to States that meet the Act’s criteria for establishing and implementing State programs that are at least as effective as the Federal OSHA program. State programs, like Federal OSHA, provide a mix of enforcement, outreach, training, and compliance assistance activities. There are 29 approved State Plans.

Many State Plans overmatch with 100% state funds, and in those cases, the federal grant award is less than 50% of the total program cost.
