Program Objective

Program goal(s) name: Strengthen tribal justice system capacity to reduce crime
Program goal(s) description: Support critical needs of tribal justice systems to prevent crime and ensure tribal safety through the development, implementation, and enhancement of strategies, as well as addressing physical infrastructure needs.
Program objective(s) name: Support tribal crime victims, conduct strategic planning, and prevent and respond to violent crime.
Program objective(s) description: Engage in comprehensive, justice system-wide strategic planning to improve tribal justice and safety, including improving services for victims of crime, improving community wellness, and increasing the ability to prevent crime and respond to violent crime; Prevent and respond to violent crime in tribal communities, including investigations, forensics, prosecutions, information sharing, and supervision and re-entry in coordination with other key federal and state partners; improve prosecutors, courts, and corrections agencies, including tribal probation and tribal jails, and to effectively respond to crime and related tribal safety; implement enhanced authorities and provisions under the Tribal Law and Order Act (TLOA) and the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2022; prevent future crime by addressing the risks and needs of young adults (ages 18-25) who are involved with or at risk of involvement with the justice system; improve public safety through coordinated support for the re-entry of returning tribal members from federal or state prison sentences; improve the safety and effectiveness of tribal law enforcement officers; improve substance use disorder treatment services; and address physical tribal justice system infrastructure needs through the renovation, expansion or construction of single jurisdiction or regional tribal justice-related facilities.

Award Procedure

All final award decisions will be made by the Assistant Attorney General, unless a statute explicitly authorizes award decisions by another official or there is written delegation of authority to another official. For successful applicants, JustGrants will send a system-generated email to the Application Submitter, Authorized Representative, and Entity Administrator with information on accessing their official award package in JustGrants. The award package will include key information (such as funding amount and period of performance) as well as award conditions that must be followed. The Authorized Representative for the entity should accept or decline the award within 45 days of the notification.

Decision Timeline

  • Approval: From 120 to 180 days

The review procedure for applications is specified in the notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) and generally includes eligibility and responsiveness, merit, programmatic, budget, and risk reviews.
