Program Objective

The Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA) advances the Department of the Interior’s role as stewards of the public lands by cultivating community-based conservation and partnerships. This program provides support and guidance for carrying out the expenditure of appropriated funds generated from the sale of public lands in the valley of Las Vegas, Nevada. In part, the SNPLMA funds are used for the development of Parks, Trails, and Natural Areas in Clark, Lincoln, and White Pine counties, and Carson City, all of Nevada; development and implementation of a multi-species habitat conservation plan in Clark County; and development and implementation of comprehensive, multijurisdictional, cost-effective hazardous fuels reduction and wildfire prevention plans in the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Carson Range in Douglas and Washoe counties and Carson City, and the Spring Mountains of Nevada. The program will focus funded partnerships on key activities in support of the Department of the Interior's priorities to manage public lands and waters, strengthening the government -to-government relationship with sovereign Tribal Nations, and invest in a unleashing American energy, where there is clear alignment of bureau priorities.

Program details & compliance

Description

The Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA) supports a broad initiative to strengthen community-based conservation, improve public recreation, and enhance land management across Nevada. Enacted in 1998, SNPLMA authorizes the orderly sale of certain public lands in the Las Vegas Valley and reinvests the revenue into a Special Account. These funds are used for projects that benefit communities and public lands throughout the state. SNPLMA supports projects that promote environmental stewardship, expand recreation opportunities, and address large-scale natural resource challenges. Through a competitive, round-based funding process, the program invests in creating and improving parks, trails, and natural areas; implementing the Clark County Multi-Species Habitat Conservation Plan; reducing wildfire risk; restoring ecosystems; and advancing community-driven conservation in both urban and rural areas. This collaborative approach ensures that investments reflect regional priorities and local needs, resulting in projects that improve quality of life, protect natural resources, and expand access to outdoor spaces. Each funding round identifies priority categories and invites eligible partners to submit project nominations. Projects may include new recreation facilities, restoration of degraded landscapes, multi-jurisdictional wildfire mitigation strategies, or long-term conservation planning. What makes SNPLMA unique is its region-wide mission combined with a commitment to transparent, accountable, and locally focused stewardship. All funded projects must align with SNPLMA authorizing legislation, follow federal grant and cooperative agreement requirements, and meet environmental and cultural compliance standards.
