FY2024 14 student interns from migrant and seasonal farm-worker families were successfully recruited and placed into 10-week summer internships at 9 agencies within USDA.

Program Objective

To increase the number of students studying agriculture, food, natural resources, science, engineering, health, and other related disciplines, and to offer internship opportunities within USDA.

Eligibility

Eligible Applicants

  • 501(c)(3) nonprofits
  • Local governments
  • State governments
  • Non-government (general)

Any community-based organization, network, or coalition of community-based organizations that—
(1) has demonstrated experience in providing agricultural education or other agriculturally related services to socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers and veteran farmers or ranchers;
(2) has provided to the Secretary documentary evidence of work with, and on behalf of, socially disadvantaged farmers or ranchers and veteran farmers or ranchers during the 3-year period preceding the submission of an application for assistance under this subsection; and
(3) does not engage in activities prohibited under section 501(c)(3) of title 26.

Assistance is provided through cooperative agreements following the approval of the USDA Office of Partnerships and Public Engagement.

Description

Provides internship opportunities within USDA to diversify its workforce and deliver services to all segments of the public with emphasis on historically underserved communities, including students at Minority-Serving Institutions.

Use of Funds

Allowed Uses

For the coordination of an internship program providing work assignments for students within the Department and such other activities as the association that enters into the agreement including:
(1) the recruitment of students;
(2) arrangements for travel of the students to Washington, District of Columbia, and to agency field locations;
(3) the provision of housing for students, if required; and
(4) all activities for the students that take place outside the Department work assignments of the students.
