FY2025 AMF: A 2024 evaluation of the first three years of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship program (Academic Years 2020-2023) found the program increased the number of new addiction medicine physicians by 158 percent and addiction psychiatry physicians by 11 percent.

In AY 2023-2024, the AMF Program trained 181 fellows, a 12 percent increase compared to AY 2022-2023. By the end of AY 2023-2024, 159 physicians completed their fellowship.


ISTP: In AY 2023-2024, ISTP trained 296 health care professionals, including psychologists, masters-level social workers, nurse practitioners, physician-assistants, and registered nurses. By the end of AY 2023-2024, 184 health care professionals completed the ISTP program.

Program Objective

The purpose of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program and the Integrated Substance Use Disorder Training Program is to train health professionals including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, counselors, nurses, social workers, and addiction medicine specialists in mental health and substance use prevention and treatment. These programs develop and expand the behavioral health workforce to practice in rural and medically underserved areas and to integrate primary care and behavioral health services.

AMF: Applicants may be an organization is a U.S.-based sponsoring institution (or parent institution of the sponsoring institution) of an accredited addiction medicine or accredited addiction psychiatry fellowship program, or a consortium (consisting of at least one domestic teaching health center and the sponsoring institution) of a domestic addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry fellowship program. The sponsoring institution must be accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

ISTP: Teaching Health Centers; Federally Qualified Health Centers; Community Mental Health Centers; Rural Health Clinics; health centers operated by the Indian Health Service, Indian tribes, tribal organizations, or urban Indian organization. Entities with a demonstrated record of success in providing training for nurse practitioners, physician assistants, health service psychologists, and/or social workers.

AMF: Fellows must be enrolled full-time (12 months) or part-time (24 months) at the sponsoring institution receiving the grant. A fellow must be a citizen of the United States, a foreign national who possesses a visa permitting permanent residence in the United States, or any other “qualified alien” under section 431(b) of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, Pub. L. 104-193, as amended.

ISTP: A participant or faculty/instructor receiving support from grant funds must be a citizen, non-citizen national of the United States, an individual lawfully admitted for permanent residence to the United States, or any other “qualified alien” under section 431(b) of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 Pub. L. 104-193, as amended.

Description

The purpose of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program is to expand the number of fellows at accredited addiction medicine and addiction psychiatry fellowship programs trained as addiction medicine specialists. These fellows will train in medically underserved, community-based settings that integrate primary care with mental health and substance use disorder (SUD) prevention and treatment services.

The purpose of the Integrated Substance Use Disorder Training Program is to expand the number of nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, counselors, nurses, and/or social workers (including individuals completing clinical training requirements for licensure) trained to provide mental health and substance use disorder (SUD), including opioid use disorder (OUD) services. The providers will train in underserved community-based settings that integrate primary care, mental health, and SUD services, including working with pediatric populations.

AMF Program Restricted Uses: Indirect costs under training awards will be budgeted and reimbursed at 8 percent of modified total direct costs rather than on the basis of a negotiated rate agreement, and are not subject to upward or downward adjustment.

Applicants should review the individual HRSA notice of funding opportunity issued under this program for any required proof or certifications which must be submitted with an application package. Applicant institutions are required to include documentation of accreditation in their application. All programs must be accredited institutions of higher education or accredited professional training programs. 2 CFR 200, Subpart E - Cost Principles applies to this program.
