Program Objective
The Native Employment Works (NEW) award enables eligible Indian tribes and Alaska Native organizations to administer programs that provide work activities and supportive services to enhance job readiness, job placement, and job retention for Native Americans. NEW funding supports recipients in serving their designated service populations through these work activities and supportive services.
Eligibility
Eligible Applicants
- Federally Recognized Tribal Government
An Indian tribe or Alaska Native organization that operated a Tribal JOBS (Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training) Program in fiscal year 1995.
Beneficiaries
- Tribal
Each eligible Indian tribe or Alaska Native organization designates its service area and population to receive services.
How to Apply
Award Procedure
Once a NEW plan has been reviewed and approved by ACF, funds are awarded in annual lump sums, typically around July 1 each year.

- Approval: From 30 to 60 days
- Renewal interval: > 180 Days

Use of Funds
Allowed Uses
Recipients have broad flexibility to use the award for the purpose of making work activities available.
Recipients may provide, pay for, or reimburse expenses for supportive services, including but not limited to transportation, child care, work-related services, and other work or family-sufficiency-related expenses deemed necessary by the tribal organization to enable client participation in the program.
Required Documentation
The plan must be accompanied by an SF-424B (Assurances for Non-Construction Programs) that is signed by the chief executive officer or designee.

Formula
The amount awarded for each tribal organization equals the funding it received in fiscal year 1994 to operate its JOBS Program.
