💡 Tips for applicants
- Focus your project on reducing repetitive flood damage in NFIP-participating communities. Projects with documented flood history are more competitive.
- Coordinate with your state before submitting if you are a local government. State approval and submission pathway are required.
- Clearly document how your project will reduce NFIP financial exposure. Connect flood risk reduction directly to NFIP goals.
- Include detailed cost-sharing commitments upfront. Show how your organization will fund the non-federal share of the project.
- Align your timeline with the January 31, 2028 deadline. Federal grants typically require several months of preparation time.
⚠️ Common mistakes
Failing to coordinate with state/territorial government before applying as a local government. Proposing projects outside NFIP-participating communities or unrelated to NFIP policyholder protection. Underestimating cost-sharing requirements or providing insufficient documentation of matching funds.
