Program description

This effort seeks to address multiple facets of export control challenges. The first component will analyze trade data, create exemplary visualizations (e.g., dashboards), and train export control authorities to use data analysis for export control implementation. The second component will design, develop, and deploy a smartphone-accessible application for frontline officers to detect and identify export-controlled commodities. The third component will train recipients to effectively, responsively, and proactively engage regulated industry based on identified proliferation trends.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Address all three components in your proposal: data analytics, mobile application development, and training programs for stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate existing expertise or partnerships in export control, data visualization, or field operations.
  • Show how your training approach will build capacity among both government officials and regulated industry partners.
  • Clearly explain how the smartphone application improves field detection of export-controlled commodities.
  • If your organization is foreign-based, ensure you understand additional compliance and review requirements under State Department regulations.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Failing to address all three project components (data analytics, app development, training) weakens competitiveness. Underestimating the compliance burden for foreign organizations or misunderstanding for-profit eligibility restrictions causes rejections. Proposing unclear or unrealistic timelines for deploying mobile technology across multiple jurisdictions raises reviewer concerns.
