Program description

The goal of the FY 2026 Team Nutrition Training Grant: Growing Healthier Futures is to enhance training for child nutrition professionals to improve meal quality, support wellness policies and nutrition education that emphasize whole, minimally processed foods, and build sustainable infrastructure for NSLP, SBP, SFSP, and CACFP program operators.

Applicants have the option of selecting one of the two objectives below. Applicants must select only one (1) grant objective.

Grant Objective #1: Deliver training and technical assistance to child nutrition professionals in the School Meals Programs to improve meal planning and preparation in line with the Dietary Guidelines, while promoting nutrition education and fostering healthy school environments that support nutritious food choices and active lifestyles. Proposals must focus on all three (3) School Meals Programs: NSLP, SBP and SFSP.

Grant Objective #2: Provide training, mentorship, and technical assistance to CACFP providers to enhance meal planning and preparation for children and adults, while delivering nutrition education through multiple channels and promoting healthy food environments at CACFP sites.

FAQ

Who is eligible to apply for this grant?

State agencies that administer NSLP, SBP, SFSP, or CACFP in eligible territories. Your state must operate at least one of these child nutrition programs.

Can I apply for both objectives?

No. You must select exactly one objective. You cannot combine school meals training with CACFP training in a single application.

What activities can I fund?

Training and technical assistance for nutrition professionals. Also supported: meal planning support, nutrition education programs, wellness policy development, and infrastructure building.

What is the typical funding range for awards?

Awards range from $500,000 to $1,000,000. Total program funding is $10,000,000 for FY 2026.

Is cost-sharing required?

No. This grant does not require matching funds or cost-sharing from your organization.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Choose your objective strategically. School meals (Objective #1) requires training across three programs; CACFP (Objective #2) focuses on one program. Pick the best fit for your state capacity.
  • Emphasize sustainability and infrastructure. Reviewers want to see how training will build lasting systems, not one-time events. Show how your state will maintain these improvements.
  • Focus on whole, minimally processed foods. The grant explicitly prioritizes this approach. Align your training curriculum and nutrition standards with this emphasis.
  • Include concrete metrics. Document how you'll measure improvements in meal quality, staff competency, and participant outcomes. Vague goals reduce competitiveness.
  • Build partnerships early. Collaborate with school districts, childcare providers, nutrition experts, and community organizations. Show these commitments in letters of support.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Applying as a local school district instead of a state agency. This grant is for state-level program administrators only. Proposing training for school meals without covering all three required programs (NSLP, SBP, SFSP) if you choose Objective #1. Submitting a vague training plan without specific learning outcomes or how you'll measure success.
