💡 Tips for applicants

  • Emphasize the practical application of data analytics to real-world export control challenges. Show how your work strengthens government enforcement capacity.
  • If developing a mobile application, include wireframes and user testing plans. Frontline officers need tools that are intuitive and work offline.
  • Connect your training programs to identified export control gaps. Use proliferation data and case studies to justify curriculum design.
  • Demonstrate partnership with actual export control authorities or regulated industry. Letters of support show you understand end-user needs.
  • Budget realistically for sustained technical support and platform maintenance. State Department awards require ongoing responsiveness to government priorities.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Overlooking end-user needs; applicants propose solutions without consulting actual export control officers or industry. Underestimating training complexity; export control expertise requires structured, multi-session programs with follow-up support. Weak data security plan; applications handling sensitive trade data must address encryption, access controls, and compliance with federal standards.
