Indirect costs are overhead expenses that support a project but can’t be tied to it directly — rent, utilities, administration, accounting. Funders reimburse them through a negotiated indirect cost rate or, for many federal grants, a 10% de minimis rate. They are distinct from direct costs like salaries and supplies for the funded work.
